Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what is his latest estimate of total social security expenditure in England, Scotland, Wales and the United Kingdom as a whole;

(2) what are the latest estimates of per capita expenditure in England, Scotland, Wales and the United Kingdom as a whole on the following social security benefits: (a) retirement pensions, (b) invalidity benefits, (c) industrial disablement benefit, (d) widows' pensions, (e) dependants' allowance, (f) lump sums to pensioners and (g) supplementary benefit, divided into supplementary pensions and supplementary allowances, unemployment benefit, sickness and injury benefit and maternity allowance.

It is estimated that in 1984–85 total social security benefit expenditure in the United Kingdom will amount to £38,800 million. Separate estimates for England, Scotland and Wales are not available. however, some indications of social security expenditure in these countries are given in "Regional Trends", published annually by HMSO.
