HC Deb 14 December 1984 vol 69 c609W
Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Prime Minister if she will list the functions which will be transferred from the Secretary of State for Social Services to the Lord Chancellor in relation to social security commissioners and their office in January 1985.

The Prime Minister

From 1 January 1985, the Lord Chancellor will have administrative responsibility for the work of the Social Security Commissioners in addition to his current responsibility for their appointment. This change involves a transfer of three sets of functions from the Secretary of State for Social Services to the Lord Chancellor:

  1. (a) the remuneration, expenses and pensions of the Commissioners;
  2. (b) the administration of their offices in England and Wales (the Secretary of State for Scotland will exercise these responsibilities for the office in Scotland), and
  3. (c) the making of regulations with respect to proceedings before them.
