§ Mr. Galleyasked the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of the M1 motorway are lit; in which county areas the lit sections are; and what further plans he has to light sections of (a) the M1 motorway and (b) other motorways.
§ Mrs. ChalkerSixty-eight miles of the M1 motorway are lit.
The other information that my hon. Friend seeks is not readily available, so I shall write to him shortly.
§ Mr. Peter Bruinvelsasked the Secretary of State for Transport how much of the M25 is presently unlit; if he will list the sections presently unlit; and if he will estimate the cost of lighting the stretches so far unlit.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThe following sections of the M25, totalling approximately 29 miles, are open to traffic and unlit: junctions 2 to 3, junctions 5 to 6, junctions 6 to 7, junctions 7 to 8, junctions 10 to 11, junctions 11 to 12, junctions 12 to 13—partially lit—junctions 17 to 18 and junctions 18 to 19.
The estimated cost, at 1982–83 prices, of lighting these sections of motorway is very approximately £2.7 million, but the final cost could be more depending on the lighting system used.
§ Mr. Peter Bruinvelsasked the Secretary of State for Transport if in the light of the accident on 11 December on the M25, he will make it his policy to light all stretches of that motorway so far unlit; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mrs. ChalkerI refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave to my hon. and learned Friend the Member for Folkestone and Hythe (Mr. Howard) on 12 December 1984, at column528. It would be premature to reach any conclusions until the examination of all the data is completed.
