HC Deb 14 December 1984 vol 69 cc615-6W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether the turnover log of the radio operator on HMS Conqueror is now in the possession of his Department; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Heseltine

HMS Conqueror's radio operator's turnover notes are in the possession of my Department.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) if he is satisfied that all signals recorded as having been transmitted (a) from HMS Conqueror to Flag Officer Submarines and (b) from Flag Officer Submarines to HMS Conqueror were properly authorised during the period 1 to 4 May 1982;

(2) if, from the records now available to him, there is any evidence of unauthorised signals being sent (a) from HMS Conqueror to Flag Officer Submarines or (b) from Flag Officer Submarines to HMS Conqueror during the period 1 to 4 May 1982; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Stanley

[pursuant to his reply, 4 December 1984, c. 100]: No signal may be sent without the signature of a releasing officer. We are not aware of any signal sent without this authorisation.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether a permanent record of the movements of HMS Conqueror is made by the ship's internal navigation system.

Mr. Stanley

[pursuant to his reply, 27 November 1984, c. 410]: A record of HMS Conqueror's position would have been maintained by taking readings from the ship's inertial navigation system. The record is not normally retained permanently but a portion of HMS Conqueror's record has been kept for analysis.
