asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what change has taken place in consumer demand for beef and lamb, respectively, since 1979.

[pursuant to his reply, 11 December 1984, c. 436]: Information from the national food survey indicates that between the first three quarters of 1979 and the first three quarters of 1984 household consumption of beef and sheepmeat fell by 26 per cent. and 21 per cent., respectively.

[pursuant to his reply, 11 December 1984, c. 436]: Data collected for inclusion in the retail price index indicate that, between October 1979 and October 1984, the average retail price of beef and sheepmeat increased by 37 per cent. and 25 per cent., respectively. Over the same period the retail price index increased by 52 per cent.
