HC Deb 12 December 1984 vol 69 c512W
Mr. McCusker

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the amount of subsidy paid per annum to provide school meals in Scotland; and what proportion is paid to subsidise the cost of midday meals to boarding pupils.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The Government does not directly subsidise school meals. However provision for net expenditure by local authorities on school meals of £37.6 million has been included in the relevant expenditure for 1985–86, on which rate support grant is payable. This figure includes provision for midday meals for pupils accommodated in school hostels, but the amount involved cannot be separately identified.
