HC Deb 11 December 1984 vol 69 c412W
Mr. Clay

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish a breakdown of the cost to his Department in the last financial year of the provision of presentations comprising information films, lectures and exhibitions to selected groups and to the public in general.

Mr. Butler

Ministers, service officers and officials regularly give public presentations and lectures on a wide range of defence issues. It is not possible to assess the cost of such presentations without disproportionate effort. In 1983–84 the cost of service recruiting and public relations films and exhibitions amounted to about £2.5 million. The cost of the RN and RAF presentation teams amounted to about £0.5 million, including manpower costs.

64. Sir William van Straubenzee

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the annual cost of his Department's information service.

Mr. Lee

The cost of defence public relations worldwide amounted to some £6.2 million in 1983–84. This figure includes expenditure on public relations activities together with staff and related costs.
