asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many ear, nose and throat consultant posts there are per million population in each of the English health regions; how many in each region are currently vacant; and what has been the change in the number of (a) established and (b) filled posts since 1979.

the number of inpatient and day cases treated in the ear, nose and throat specialty increased from 260,000 in 1978 to 305,000 in 1983 and the number of outpatient attendances rose from 1.9 million to 2.1 million.
