asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the current effectiveness of the United Kingdom air defence network.

I refer the hon. Member to paragraphs 409–412 of the "Statement on the Defence Estimates 1984".

As my right hon. Friend the Minister of State for Defence Procurement said on 29 October, at column 854, it is taking longer than originally anticipated to commission the Nimrod airborne early-warning aircraft.
