§ Mr. Nelsonasked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) if it remains the policy of Her Majesty's Government to maintain the weight limit for heavy lorries on United Kingdom roads at 38 tonnes; and if he will make a statement;
(2) if he will make it his policy not to accede to any agreement at the forthcoming meeting of European Economic Community Transport Ministers in Brussels on 11 and 12 December that will have the effect of raising the lorry weight limit in the United Kingdom to 40 tonnes at any specific or unspecified date in the future without first obtaining the agreement of Parliament: and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. RidleyIt remains the policy of the Government for the foreseeable future to maintain the weight limit at 38 tonnes.
It is not my intention to accept any commitment to an increase, unless and until such a proposal has been agreed by Parliament.
