§ Mr. David Youngasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will take steps to increase the penalties for attaching a misleading description to food sold in hotels and restaurants, with particular reference to the description of dishes as fresh when they have been made from processed ingredients.
§ Mr. ButcherThe penalties for offences under the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 have recently been increased to a fine of up to £2,000 on summary conviction. The maximum penalty on indictment is an unlimited fine or two years' imprisonment or both. I consider these penalties sufficient to deal with any problem of misleading descriptions of food.
