HC Deb 10 December 1984 vol 69 c359W
Mr. Sedgemore

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many building trade operatives were registered as unemployed (a) in Hackney and (b) in the parliamentary constituency of Hackney, South and Shoreditch on the last occasion for which figures are available.

Mr. Alan Clark

The information requested, in respect of registrants at jobcentres, is available in the House of Commons Library. The latest figures relate to September 1982.

Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the increase in the number of unemployed people since May 1979.

Mr. Alan Clark

On 8 November 1984, the number of unemployed claimants in the United Kingdom was 3,223,000, an estimated increase of 2,004,000 since May 1979. The figures are affected by the 1983 Budget provisions which enable some men, aged 60 and over, to receive the long term rate of supplementary benefit and national insurance credits without having to sign on at an unemployment benefit office. Between April and August 1983 an estimated 161,800 men were affected.
