HL Deb 10 December 1984 vol 458 c116WA
Baroness David

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools there are at the different levels of education, and whether it is intended that there shall be any addition to these numbers.

The Earl of Swinton

There are in post at present 434 Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools for England, 55 for Wales, 110 for Scotland, and 55 for Northern Ireland. The number for England will increase to 457 in January 1985 and then progressively to 490 by 1987–88. There will also be small increases for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Most members of Her Majesty's Inspectorates inspect at more than one level within the education service and the balance of their work varies from term to term in the light of current priorities.
