HC Deb 10 December 1984 vol 69 c340W
Dr. McDonald

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will publish in the Official Report the design capacity of the Dartford tunnel in terms of vehicles usage per hour.

Mrs. Chalker

[pursuant to the reply, 7 December 1984, c. 311]: I understand from the Dartford tunnel management that the design capacity for the tunnel is 3,500 vehicles per hour in each direction. In view of the variation in traffic flow throughout the day and the present number of toll booths, there is currently a practical limitation on the tunnel's capacity of 65,000 vehicles per day. Work is under way to increase the number of toll booths, which should increase the capacity of the tunnel, to 85,000 vehicles per day.
