HC Deb 10 December 1984 vol 69 c338W
Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he is satisfied that compact spare wheels now fitted as original equipment in a number of imported cars are as safe as ordinary spare wheels in all normally encountered driving conditions.

Mrs. Chalker

We have no evidence that the use of these tyres has contributed to accidents. Provided drivers use them within the limits of performance specified by the vehicle manufacturer, and replace them with the repaired tyre as soon as possible, I am satisfied they are unlikely to be a risk to road safety.
