HC Deb 06 December 1984 vol 69 c282W
Mr. Terry Davis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrangements have been made for dental treatment for prisoners on remand at Winson Green prison.

Mr. Mellor

All inmates at Birmingham prison including those on remand have access when necessary to the services of a dentist who attends twice weekly; should emergency treatment be required, inmates may be taken to the local dental hospital. The prison rules also provide that if an unconvicted prisoner desires the attendance of a dentist of his own choice and will pay any expense incurred, the governor shall, if he is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds for the request and unless the Secretary of State otherwise directs, allow him to be visited and treated by that dentist in consultation with the prison medical officer. If the hon. Member has any particular case in mind I shall be happy to look into it.
