HC Deb 06 December 1984 vol 69 c279W
Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the number of stop and searches done in each police district within N division of the Metropolitan police for each year between 1979 and 1983 and for each month in 1984.

Mr. Giles Shaw

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the available information is as given in the table. The table shows the number of persons or vehicles recorded as stopped; figures for stops of persons and stops of vehicles are not separately identifiable. Statistics showing the number of occasions on which a search was conducted are not available. Monthly figures are not collected centrally.

Stops of persons or vehicles in N District of the Metropolitan Police District

Caledonian Road 1,600 400
N DISTRICT TOTAL 18,300 22,400 26,800 26,400 28,100
* The figures are rounded because they are based on information recorded in station registers for operational purposes and as this form of recording is unsuitable for the preparation of statistical summaries the resultant figures may be subject to some error. Components may not add to the total because they have been rounded independently.
† The rise in 1983 is largely due to a tightening up in recording procedures.
Caledonian Road station closed 17 March 1980. Stops in this area were included thereafter in the station areas of Islington and Kings Cross Road.
