HC Deb 06 December 1984 vol 69 c277W
Mr. Robert Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the cost of policing the miners' strike in the Merseyside area at the latest date.

Mr. Giles Shaw

I understand that up to 27 October the additional costs to the Merseyside police authority resulting from the policing of the miners' dispute in the county were some £3.9 million.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many miners have received injuries on picket lines during the miners' dispute to the latest date.

Mr. Giles Shaw

It is not possible to provide an accurate figure for the number of miners injured, because not all cases would be reported to the police.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the latest estimate of the cost of policing the miners' strike at the latest date; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Giles Shaw

Information on the total costs of the dispute to date is not available. The Home Office has so far paid to police authorities in England and Wales advances of police grant, and of the special payment which my right hon. and learned Friend is making available, on expenditure totalling £95.8 million.
