asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many pupils in Scotland will be taking the standard grade examinations in 1986.

Firm figures will not be available until schools and other presenting centres submit provisional estimates of presentations to the Scottish examination board in October 1985. On present indications, about 77,500 pupils are expected to complete courses in S4 and to be presented for one or more standard grade examination in 1986. Estimates of candidates at other levels of secondary education are not available at this stage.
