HC Deb 05 December 1984 vol 69 c186W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many advanced level secondary school pupils applied for and obtained a place at either Oxford or Cambridge university for the 1984–85 academic year; and how these numbers compare with the four previous academic years.

Mr. Brooke

The number of United Kingdom candidates applying for and obtaining a place at Oxford and Cambridge universities in each of the last five years was as follows:

Applicants Acceptances
1984–85 14,026 5,484
1983–84 14,359 5,334
1982–83 14,244 5,357
1981–82 13,563 5,464
1980–81 13,580 5,552

The numbers include a small number of students from further education colleges as well as school pupils.

The numbers of acceptances include a few conditional acceptances at Oxford, a small proportion of whom fail to meet the required conditions.
