Dr. McDonald

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much was spent, per child, in real terms in each of the last five years in primary and secondary schools in Essex on (a) books, (b) equipment and (c) maintenance and repair, compared with the average for the non-metropolitan counties.

Mr. Dunn

[pursuant to his reply, 26 November 1984, c. 355]: The average expenditure per pupil in real terms, on books, equipment and maintenance and repairs in each of the five years to 1982–83, the latest year for which firm figures are available, are set out in the following table. The combined figures for primary and secondary schools are given.

RPI, all items except food index for equipment and the local authorities' non-teaching cost index for maintenance and repairs.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what has been the real value of the capitation allowances in the primary and secondary schools in Essex for each of the last five years, compared with the average for the non-metropolitan counties.
