HC Deb 05 December 1984 vol 69 cc212-3W
Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what percentage of payment claims made by dentists was reviewed in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983; what was this percentage expressed in numerical terms; and how many were referred for further examination to the Scottish regional dental officers.

Mr. John MacKay

Every claim is routinely checked and all claims for complex and high cost treatment—currently about 100,000 or 4 per cent. of the total number of claims—are examined by the dental advisers of the Scottish Dental Estimates Board. References to the regional dental officers were as follows:

Number
1980 1,740
1981 2,270
1982 2,570
1983 4,550

Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the gross earnings of dentists in the National Health Service in each of the last five years, showing in each year the highest and lowest annual earnings paid.

Mr. John MacKay

The information is as follows:

Year Highest gross earnings

£

Lowest gross earnings

£

1979 88,190 210
1980 116,497 423
1981 130,842 193
1982 152,326 93
1983 140,963 23

Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the number of examinations which took place in 1980, 1981 and 1982 of the work done by those National Health dentists with gross earnings of £100,000 in the relevant year; and with what results.

Mr. John MacKay

The information is as follows:

1980 1981 1982
Number of dentists with gross earnings of £100,000 or more 1 5 6
Number of references to the regional dental service in respect of work by those dentists 2 13 36

In two of the cases reported on by the regional dental service the dental advisors of the Scottish Dental Estimates Board considered that work had been unsatisfactory.
