HC Deb 05 December 1984 vol 69 c204W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what:is the estimated cost of the Blackwater drainage scheme; how this cost is to be divided between Her Majesty's Government, the Government of the Republic of Ireland and the European Community; how many jobs the scheme will provide; when it is to be completed; and what inquiry has been held into the opinions of local farmers and others concerned.

Dr. Boyson

The total estimated cost of the Blackwater drainage scheme is £29 million, of which Her Majesty's Government will meet £16 million and the Republic of Ireland £13 million. The European Community is contributing approximately £5 million in grant-aid which is to be shared between both Governments. It is not possible to assess with precision the effect on employment since the majority of the work will be carried out by contractors. However it is considered that up to 250 jobs could be provided during the five-year construction period which will end in 1989–90.

In accordance with statutory requirements the scheme was published in regional and local newspapers and exhibited at local council offices. There was also consultation with local farmers, district councils and with angling and conservation interests.
