HL Deb 04 December 1984 vol 457 c1300WA
Lord Graham of Edmonton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are aware of assertions by traders, following publication of the report of the Auld Committee on shop opening hours and Sunday trading, that they intend to break the law as embodied in the Shops Act 1950, and what they propose to do to uphold the law.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Lord Elton)

I have seen reports to this effect. The Government do not condone law-breaking of any kind. Enforcement of the Shops Act 1950 is a matter for the local authorities and the courts.
