asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what discussions he has had with the Medical Research Council and the Science and Engineering Research Council about the level of their budgets for next year.

My right hon. Friend met the chairman and the secretary of the Medical Research Council on 23 July and discussed that council's financial position. He has had no discussions with the Science and Engineering Research Council about the level of their budget for next year.
