HL Deb 04 December 1984 vol 457 cc1300-1WA
Lord Harris of Greenwich

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How much the pay and allowances of a police constable have risen since the last increase in shotgun licence fees.

Lord Elton

Since 1st July 1980, when shotgun licence fees were last increased, the basic pay of most police constables has increased by 73 per cent. Rent allowance, which is paid to officers who are not provided with free accommodation, is the only allowance paid to most police constables outside London. There has been a wide range of increases in rent allowance, which is negotiated biennially for individual forces and approved by my right honourable friend the Home Secretary.
