HC Deb 04 December 1984 vol 69 cc150-1W
Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of Stale for Scotland if he will list the number of local jobs per hectare supported by the principal land based activities in Scotland.

Mr. John MacKay

The numbers of local jobs provided per 1,000 hectares by the principal land based activities in Scotland are as follows:

Number
Dairy farming 31
Lowland crop and stock farming 22
Upland mixed farming 8
Forestry 7
Hill sheep farming 1

In addition there are supporting jobs in the primary processing of agricultural and forestry products, in haulage and in the local community infrastructure which are not readily quantifiable.

Dr. Godman

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many people at the latest available date been registered as unemployed in the Greenock travel-to-work area who are (a) aged under 24 years, (b) 25 to 40 years and (c) 41 to 60 years;

(2) if he will list in the Official Report the number of (a) men and (b) women who have been unemployed for each of the last five years in the Greenock travel-to-work area.

Mr. Allan Stewart

I refer the hon. Member to my right hon. Friend's letter to him of 22 October. Current information is available by age and sex for the former Greenock travel-to-work area and (from June 1983) for the revised Greenock and Port Glasgow travel-to-work area, and may be obtained from the House of Commons Library. The change in October 1982 from a registrant to a claimant based count affects the comparability of the data for the former Greenock travel-to-work area over the five years.
