Mr. Sean Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) if he will list all financial aid from central Government and the European Commission direct to industry in the borough of Knowsley during 1984–85 showing the amount involved in each category.

(2) what is the value of regional development grants and selective financial assistance to Knowsley in 1984–85; what was their value in 1983–84; what their estimated value will be in 1985–86 and 1986–87; and what form this assistance will take following his statement of 28 November to the House.

[pursuant to the reply, 3 December]: Information about expenditure on regional industrial assistance is kept by reference to employment office areas, but in the case of regional development grants only payments over £25,000 are allocated in this way. The borough of Knowsley is not conterminous with any ECM but covers parts of several. Information about payments of regional development grant and offers of regional selective assistance is as follows:
