HC Deb 03 December 1984 vol 69 cc35-6W
Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many sites on trunk roads with high accident rates have been recommended for remedial action by the Greater London council; on how many of those sites his Department has taken the appropriate action; and what is the estimated annual saving in personal injury accidents and financial costs to the community on those schemes which have been completed, and in relation to those schemes which have yet to be begun.

Mrs. Chalker

The Department has worked closely with the GLC for many years on the data provided by the police to identify accident black spots on London's trunk roads. To extract details of all sites identified through these contacts would be costly and difficult. The Department has taken or plans remedial action to reduce accidents wherever a serious problem exists.

Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Transport on how many sites on trunk roads in London his Department has initiated small scale accident remedial schemes; and what was the average cost of each scheme.

Mrs. Chalker

My Department operates a rolling programme of special schemes of this sort in London involving 23 locations over the past three years at an average cost per scheme of £75,000.
