HC Deb 03 December 1984 vol 69 c35W
Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the stretches of dual carriageway, motorway and trunk road at present without a crash barrier between the carriageways and the dates such crash barriers are scheduled for installation.

Mrs. Chalker

The following stretches of motorway in England are without a safety fence between the carriageways:

  • M5 South of Bristol 8km
  • M6 Cumbria-Shap 14.5km
  • M10 St. Albans bypass 5km
  • M50 Ross Spur 35.5km

I am currently reviewing the traffic and accident records of these stretches to assess whether presence of a crash barrier would be of positive help on these lengths. I will write to my hon. Friend when I have reached a conclusion.

Similar information is not available for all-purpose dual carriageway trunk roads on which such safety fences are provided only as the need arises. There is no programme for the comprehensive provision of safety fences.
