Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications for naturalisation were refused in 1983 in each of the following categories and what percentage of completed applications they represent; (a) failure to meet statutory residential requirements, (b) failure to meet requirements as to character, (c) failure to meet language requirements, (d) failure to meet requirements as to future residential intentions, (e) other reasons and (f) total.

Mr. Waddington

The information is as follows:

As percentage of applications complete
Number of applications completed 8,676
Number of applications refused 819 9.4
Reasons for refusal:
(a) Failure to meet residential requirements etc. 259 3.0
(b) Failure to meet requirements as to character 286 3.3
