HC Deb 01 August 1984 vol 65 c364W
Mr. Simon Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will take action to ensure that medical records are retained for longer than 21 years, especially in areas around nuclear installations, so as to allow long-term research to take place.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Subject to the recommended minimum periods of retention of health records for litigation purposes, it is for health authorities and family practitioner committees to decide how long to keep records in the light of local operational and other requirements, including those of research.
