HC Deb 01 August 1984 vol 65 c378W
Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what machinery he has set up in his Department to counter obstruction to abolition by the Greater London council and the metropolitan county councils.

Mr. Waldegrave

I shall make whatever arrangements are necessary to deal expeditiously with applications for my consent to activities of the GLC and metropolitan county councils, within the financial provisions voted by Parliament for my Department for the current financial year.

Mr. Heddle

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he intends to issue any general consents in connection with the provisions in the Local Government (Interim Provisions) Act 1984, which require his consent to certain activities of the Greater London council and the metropolitan county councils.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

My Department will be writing shortly to the Greater London council and the metropolitan county councils enclosing copies of initial general consents under sections 7, 8 and 9 of the Local Government (Interim Provisions) Act 1984. Copies of that letter will be sent to the relevant local authority associations, and to the constituent authorities in the areas concerned, and I will arrange for a copy to be placed in the Library.
