HC Deb 01 August 1984 vol 65 cc278-9W
Mr. Conway

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether the names of the new infantry battalions to be raised as part of the Territorial Army expansion programme have been decided.

Mr. Lee

Yes. I am pleased to be able to announce that Her Majesty has approved the following names for these battalions— "1st Battalion The Yorkshire and Cleveland Volunteers" for the battalion with its headquarters based initially in York. — "8th Battalion The Light Infantry (Volunteers)" for the battalion with its headquarters in Wakefield. — "3rd Battalion The Devon and Cornwall Rifle Volunteers" for the battalion with its headquarters in Plymouth. — "3rd (Volunteer) Battalion The Cheshire Regiment" for the battalion with its headquarters based initially in Northwich, but which will move to Runcorn subsequently. — "5th (Volunteer) Battalion The Royal Green Jackets" for the battalion with its headquarters in Oxford. — "8th (Volunteer) Battalion The Queen's Fusiliers (City of London)" for the battalion with its headquarters in London.

These names were proposed to Her Majesty by the Army Board following wide consultation. In considering appropriate titles for these battalions we have been particularly conscious of the value of the local links which are fostered by their names. These battalions will begin to form in 1986, in concert with the best of the second phase of the expansion of the Territorial Army.
