HC Deb 01 August 1984 vol 65 c258W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has to ensure the work of the Greater London council's cycling project team will continue if the Greater London council is abolished; and what financial resources he intends to devote to cycle schemes in London.

Mr. John Fraser

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many officers of his Department of the level of principal and above it is intended should be assigned to deal with cycle schemes in London upon the proposed abolition of the Greater London council.

Mrs. Chalker

As I told the hon. Member for Southwark and Bermondsey (Mr. Hughes) on 5 June at column 134 London boroughs will take over responsibility, including financial responsibility for fostering and applying cycle schemes locally when the GLC is abolished. My Department's existing cycling policy team already provide advice and guidance to local authorities generally including those in London and financial support for innovatory projects. It will continue to take a keen interest in schemes developed there.
