Mr. Prescott

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what consideration was given to the provisions of Standing Order No. 116 when the Ceylon Shipping Corporation was selected as the designated shipping line for the carriage of sea mail sent to the Indian sub-continent in 1984–85.

Mr. Trippier

By virtue of section 6(5) of the Post Office Act 1969, the Post Office has ceased to be a Crown body, and consequently the provisions of House of Commons Standing Order No. 116 do not apply to contracts entered into by the corporation.
