HC Deb 01 August 1984 vol 65 c387W
Mrs. Peacock

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many beaches in the United Kingdom have failed the European Economic Community pollution inspections in each of the last five years.

Mr. Waldegrave

Of the 27 beaches identified for the purposes of the EEC directive concerned with the quality of bathing waters the following numbers did not fully comply with the required standard for total coliforms in the years 1979 to 1983 respectively: 4, 7, 2, 4, 2. In many of these cases the waters were very close to the standards. There are no central comprehensive records for other beaches.
