HC Deb 01 August 1984 vol 65 c297W
17. Mr. Marlow

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what has been the balance of trade, including invisibles, with (a) Japan and (b)West Germany for each of the last three years.

Mr. Butcher

In the three years to 1983 United Kingdom visible trade with the Federal Republic of Germany was in deficit by £0.4 billion, £2.0 billion and £3.6 billion on the Overseas Trade Statistics basis. Our visible trade with Japan was in deficit by £1.6 billion, £2.0 billion and £2.6 billion on the same basis.

There were surpluses on invisible transactions with Japan of £0.5 billion and £0.7 billion in 1981 and 1982, the latest years for which figures are available. Data on invisible transactions with the Federal Republic of Germany are not compiled separately.
