HC Deb 01 August 1984 vol 65 c303W
Sir Dudley Smith

asked the Attorney-General what action he is taking to institute criminal proceedings against officers of the Animal Liberation Front in view of its claimed responsibility for tampering with goods in a chain of public stores in order to render them dangerous to the public.

The Attorney-General

Neither I nor the Director of Public Prosecutions have the powers or the facilities to undertake the investigation of criminal offences. That is the responsibility of the police who have already commenced an investigation into the incident in question. But proceedings can only be instituted against those individuals—whether officers of the Animal Liberation Front or not—in respect of whom there is admissible evidence either that they were parties to or incited the commission of the offence.
