asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will refer any proposals for the sale of The Observer newspaper to the Monopolies Commission; and if he will make a statement.

Any proposals for the sale ofThe Observer newspaper will fall to be considered in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Fair Trading Act 1973.
