§ Mr. Hoyleasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations his Department received from the Daily Mail newspaper about the application for British citizenship made recently by Miss Zola Budd.
§ Mr. WaddingtonTheDaily Mail asked for guidance about Miss Budd's and her parents' immigration and nationality position and were told that if Miss Budd's father could produce evidence of his own British citizenship he could come here with his wife and daughter, and that Miss Budd could then apply for registration as a British citizen under section 3(1) of the British Nationality Act 1981. In response to their request for priority to be given to her application, the Daily Mail was informed that her application would be looked at with sympathy.
§ Mr. Hoyleasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assurances have been given by Miss Budd about her staying as a resident in the United Kingdom following the granting of United Kingdom citizenship; and if she was asked whether she would be returning to South Africa in due course.
