HC Deb 27 April 1984 vol 58 cc612-3W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in what capacity and over what dates George Sturch Edwards and William Burrage were employed in the Falklands as senior electricians; and what representations they made to the authorities about the overloading of electrical circuits at Port Stanley hospital.

Mr. Raison

Mr. Sturch-Edwards served in the Falkland Islands as a senior electrician with the Public Works Department from 8 November 1982 to 30 August 1983; Mr. Burrage, from 29 October 1982 to 28 April 1983. Representations made about the overloading of electrical circuits will doubtless be considered by the commission of inquiry established by the civil commissioner to investigate the circumstances of the fire at Port Stanley hospital.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he received the memorandum from Dr. Penny Key and June Allen warning about fire precautions at Port Stanley hospital.

Mr. Raison

Dr. Key, ODA medical adviser, and Miss Allen, nursing adviser, reported in April 1983 on their visit to the Falkland Islands the previous month.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans he had before 10 April for the building of a new hospital at Port Stanley for civilians.

Mr. Raison

Before the fire on 10 April, short-term renovation and extension of the existing hospital facilities were under consideration by the Falkland Islands Government rather than the construction of a completely new hospital.
