asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the loss to the Revenue if all those over 65 years with a taxable income of £5,000 a year or less were to be relieved of liability to income tax.

Mr. Moore

The cost of raising both married and single age allowances to £5,000 would be about £800 million in a full year at 1984–85 levels of income.
