HC Deb 25 April 1984 vol 58 cc537-8W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the proposed minimum price for raisins imported from third countries; how this compares with the landed price of Greek raisins

in the United Kingdom in 1983. It is not possible to provide the estimates requested since they would depend on the response of individual producers to the new measures.

Mr. Hicks

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many dairy farmers there are in the United Kingdom; and what is the estimated number who milk herds in excess of 40 and 50 cows, respectively.

Mr. MacGregor

In 1983 there were 51,726 registered milk producers in the United Kingdom. The estimates required are not available in the form requested, but in 1982, the latest date for which United Kingdom information is available, 6,127 agricultural holdings had 40 to 49 cows on them and 26,344 agricultural holdings had 50 or more cows on them.

Miss Maynard

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what was the level of milk production in France in 1983 as compared with the United Kingdom.

Mr. MacGregor

According to the most recent figures issued by the European Commission, in 1983 milk production in France and the United Kingdom was 28.440 million tonnes and 17.152 million tonnes respectively.
