HC Deb 25 April 1984 vol 58 cc502-3W
Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the attitude of Her Majesty's Government to the peace plan adopted by the Organisation of African Unity and the United Nations for direct negotiations between the Polisario Front and the Government of Morocco.

Mr. Luce

We welcomed the resolution adopted unanimously at the 19th summit of the OAU in Addis Ababa in June 1983 and supported the resolution adopted by consensus at the 38th General Assembly of the United Nations on the question of the western Sahara.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if Her Majesty's Government have had any contact with the Polisario Front; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Luce

As we do not recognise the Polisario Front, there is no question of formal contacts. There have been occasional informal contacts between Polisario representatives and Foreign and Commonwealth Office officials. These do not denote any change in our neutral policy towards the western Sahara dispute.
