HC Deb 25 April 1984 vol 58 cc479-80W
Mr. Denis Howell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department which governing bodies of British sport were consulted by him before he decided to grant British nationality to Miss Zola Budd so that she could qualify for selection for the United Kingdom Olympic team; and what advice he received from them or from the Sports Council.

Mr. Waddington

None. Qualification for selection for the United Kingdom Olympic team is not a matter for the Government.

Mr. Denis Howell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assurances were sought from Miss Zola Budd as to whether she intended to settle permanently in the United Kingdom before she was granted British nationality; and if he will make a statement of his practice towards seeking such assurances when considering applications for British nationality.

Mr. Waddington

Minors wishing to acquire British citizenship are asked to state their intended country of residence, as was Miss Budd. Similar information is not required in all cases, for example where there is an entitlement to registration.
