asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he has had any representations on behalf of owners of newer houses whose rateable values are higher than those of similar but older houses in the context of his proposals for a general revaluation of domestic property; and if he will make a statement.

I have received very few representations on this matter. The rateable value of a property is based on the annual rent which it might have been expected to command at the time of the last revaluation if it had been let on the open market. The age of a property is just one of many factors which would have been taken into account in determining that rateable value.
