HC Deb 25 April 1984 vol 58 cc534-5W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the value of output per head of those employed in agriculture in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Community and the United States of America.

Mr. MacGregor

Because of variations in the definition of statistics about agricultural output and employment in agriculture and differences in agricultural support, only broad comparisons of the kind requested can be made. The available information for 1982 is as follows.

Value of agricultural output (billion ECU) Numbers engaged in agriculture (millions) Value of output per person engaged (000 ECU)
United Kingdom *19.4 †0.634 30.7
European Community (EC 10) *145.0 †8.165 17.8
United States of America ‡149.2 ║3.600 41.4
