HC Deb 13 April 1984 vol 58 c425W
Mr. Alex Carlile

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will include in the proposals for a new prosecuting service protection of the right presently enjoyed by county prosecuting solicitors to stand as election candidates.

Mr. Mellor

The Government envisage that members of the new prosecuting service will be civil servants, and we see no grounds for making an exception in this instance to the rule that civil servants are disqualified from membership of the House of Commons, or to the restrictions on political activities which apply generally to civil servants in certain grades.
