HC Deb 13 April 1984 vol 58 cc467-8W
Mr. David Atkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science when is European Schools Day in the current year; how he is encouraging awareness of it; and if he will indicate the kind of activities he is recommending.

Mr. Dunn

There is no longer a designated day for the European schools day competition, as, from 1960 onwards, it was found more rewarding to organise it over the course of the school year. The conditions of the competition are determined by an international committee established by the Council of Europe. The Government regard the competition as contributing significantly towards enhancing an awareness of Europe within schools. In the United Kingdom it is well publicised by a voluntary committee, its costs covered by Government grant, and there is invariably a good response from schools. The Government also make a small annual contribution to the Council of Europe towards the cost of administering the competition.
